Three Tips For Doing A TV Interview From Home

ChicExecs VP of Public Relations and Digital Marketing, Kristen Wessel, shared her three tips for doing a TV interview from home on Forbes blog.

Whether via cable TV or modern streaming, TV viewership was on the rise during the early part of the pandemic. Landing a TV segment or interview is an incredibly valuable way to shine a spotlight on your brand and boost thought leadership in 2021.

Follow these three best practices to make a great impression on your TV segment or interview.

1. Film Professional Video

Streamed interviews from your laptop are obviously lower-quality than studio cameras, but you’re still expected to film a professional segment. You can do that by:

• Filming at eye level

• Checking your lighting

• Creating a distraction-free background

2. Prioritize Audio

Viewers at home will forgive you for grainy video, but they won’t be as forgiving if your audio cuts out. You need to hear the interviewer, record crystal-clear audio and minimize any potential background noise.

That means:

• Wearing earbuds

• Using a microphone

• Speaking slowly and clearly

If you’re working from home, there’s an added layer of anxiety about recording quality audio. Children, pets and the distractions of home life increase the chances of distracting background noise. Try to minimize noise by:

• Muting your computer and phone.

• Turning off appliances, like your washer, dryer or Roomba

• Double-checking that no one is visiting and that Amazon isn’t delivering packages

• Letting everyone in your home know you need quiet

• Keeping kids and pets quietly entertained in another room

• Sitting in a quiet chair

3. Practice At Least Twice

Don’t hop onto your remote interview without practicing. You don’t want to discover connectivity issues or buggy software when it’s your turn in the spotlight.

The Bottom Line

A dose of planning will ensure that you give the best impression possible during a much-anticipated TV segment or interview. Moving forward, remote interviews may be a mainstay for media interviews. Follow these three best practices to give a stress-free interview that not only increases your authority but also improves your chances of landing even more media features in the future.
