Founder Dr. Manasa Mantravadi, MD, has written an informative article in the recent edition titled “Stainless-Steel Dishware: Why It Might Be Time to Switch From Plastics.”
As parents, we never stop thinking about our children’s safety. For Dr. Mantravadi, in particular, being a pediatrician added to her concern.
She was alarmed after reading the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) report on the dangers of plastics in dinnerware. Its findings noted how chemicals in plastic disrupt children’s hormones, growth, and development. Their recommendation was to use stainless steel, just like Dr. Mantravadi’s family had used for generations in India.
“I am also a mother—and in both science and parenting there is so much to learn and discover. When my twins were infants and I made the decision to buy bright colorful plastic dishes to use when introducing solids; I believed BPA-free meant safe. My mother, an Indian immigrant, gasped when she saw this and immediately replaced those dishes with traditional Indian stainless steel (the same ones I used as a child). Her fear of chemicals leaching from the plastic into her grandchildren’s food was validated 5 years later by science,” Dr. Mantravadi writes.
Realizing options were limited, she launched Ahimsa®, the first colorful stainless steel dinnerware for kids that’s non-toxic and environmentally-friendly. Ahimsa is a Sanskrit word for “avoiding harm.” It’s the first oath Manasa took as a physician and now it’s the oath of her company. Ahimsa is the perfect mix of her love for children, medicine, the environment, and her Indian heritage.
The vibrant children’s stainless steel line of beautiful plates, bowls, cups, and utensils makes kids excited to come to the dining table. Kids will focus on the fun, shiny colors but it’s also a statement to them on how they can personally do something to help the planet. It’s amazing how a simple change in dinnerware can ensure healthier kids and a healthier planet.
Congrats Dr. Mantravadi!
