ChicExecs Celebrates International Women’s Day

In the U.S., women represent 47% of the workforce. When you look at the employment data from 2020, 52.5% of employees in the advertising, public relations and related services industry alone were women. With women around the world continuing to break down boundaries and shatter the glass ceiling, there are so many reasons to celebrate our contributions worldwide everyday.

As we approach International Women’s Day on March 8, we turn the spotlight on a few of our team members to share their views on what inspires them and what they feel today’s women bring to the table. The day itself began in the early 1900s and has evolved with each decade to bring attention to women’s global achievements and issues relevant to our time, including gender equality.

At ChicExecs, we proudly empower women to take leadership roles and have their voices heard from all levels. Whether you come from a marketing background or have found yourself returning to the workforce after years on leave, we pride ourselves on the diverse experience and skills each member brings to the team.

Learn how some of the women at ChicExecs feel empowered and empower others both in their work and outside.

Name: Kristen Wessel

Position at Company: Vice President of PR and Digital Marketing

What does it mean to you to be a part of a firm empowering women?

It means everything to me!  While the number of women in senior leadership positions has grown in the last 5 years, women are still underrepresented at every level of corporate America. For every 100 men promoted and hired to manager positions, only 72 women receive the same position. I am proud to represent a strong, women owned company. Our contributions to the workplace and within the media space are making a difference. Despite the incredible strides women have made in the workplace, there’s still work to do. We all have an important role in supporting and empowering women in the workplace and I will continue to do so at ChicExecs and beyond.

Position at Company: Vice President of Global Strategic Accounts

As a woman leader, how do you hope to empower other women in the workplace?

I strongly believe that every woman has a voice that deserves to be heard; whether you agree with their opinion or not!  Having a voice and being “seen” is critical in setting up any woman to flourish in her environment! I also feel that in order to empower other women in the workplace you need to continuously remind them of their value within the company…on their good days YES, but often (more importantly) when performance is down. It is extremely hard to excel when you are not feeling valued and your self-esteem is low.  As an empowering leader it is my job to lift up my fellow women to the point that they can stand tall on their own, surpass my personal success and empower exponentially more women in the future.

How has being a woman impacted you in the workplace?

I feel extremely blessed to work alongside so many other women. We are creative and powerful when we come together as a group. Also, I beat breast cancer recently and was only able to do so as gracefully as I did because I work with women. It’s hard for me to say that the amount of compassion and support would have been the same had I not worked with so many women.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

To me, International Women’s Day is a celebration of all the amazing accomplishments women have made in the past century. As a busy mom of three, showing my kids the behind the scenes of a thriving full time career and committed mama is my everyday goal. The accomplishments of my great grandmothers, grandmas, and my own strong mom make me proud of what it means to be a woman today. Their own sacrifices have paved the way for me to lead the life I live not only as a woman but as a female leader.

I have been very lucky to surround myself with strong women who have built me up and made me believe I deserve what I have now and to keep going after what I want. The world is out there for the taking, we just have to be confident to go after it.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

This is a great day to remind us all of what we have accomplished together but also remember there’s still so much more for us to do! We need to continue to acknowledge all the amazing contributions of women so that young girls, around the world, can see role models and are given a path to step into their greatness! This is an incredible day to celebrate us all!

How has being a woman impacted you in the workplace?

There have been instances in the past where I have felt that being a woman has put me at a disadvantage. Whether I felt like it wasn’t an even playing field or that I didn’t hold as much power as my male coworkers, there have definitely been moments that I felt less than. But on the flip side, I have also felt that being a woman has been a great asset. There is a reason people speak about women’s intuition and how it is a real and powerful thing. I have absolutely felt that me being a woman and trusting my instincts and hunches has helped me in many work situations. Trusting that gut feeling has helped me make important decisions, has inspired creativity, and has guided me in my career.

What does it mean to you to be a part of a firm empowering women?

It is so refreshing to work at a firm that empowers women in every element of the business. Women can be so supportive with affirmations that build each other up because we understand the struggles and passions women have. It feels great to work alongside women that respect each other, listen to each other’s ideas, and work to bring them to life.

What does International Women’s Day mean to you?

International Women’s Day reminds me to take a moment to look at the accomplishments that women throughout history have achieved. Being a first generation Chaldean-American woman, acknowledging the struggles that women in my family’s generations before me endured, is also important in truly finding my purpose behind being an “empowered woman.”

With women playing a bigger role in marketing in the U.S., we recognize that everyone on our team has unique qualities that collectively make our woman-focused agency a powerful force to help brands achieve their dreams.

From the soccer field to the boardrooms, equalizing pay and providing women with increased leadership opportunities is something of utmost importance to ChicExecs.

Equitable treatment, meaningful conversations, room for growth – ChicExecs strives to give each team member the space for continued opportunities.
